Bangkok has also devised its own extraction protocols and an elaborated meta-genomic pipeline. Additionally, they have created a toolbox that includes various machine learning algorithms, all of which have been optimized to run on high-performance compute clusters powered by SLURM.

Particularities
The technology is extremely well suited to solve data science challenges in the microbiome analysis domain. It has proven itself in the Oil and Gas exploration workflows but can be applied in the same way to any microbiome study. It gives the acquiring Company the opportunity to make a quick start with a proven method and save years of development work. The technology stack can be applied for any microbiome study and with little adaptation, any genomic studies.

The organisation
Meta-genomic pipeline software: The software is designed to generate optimal fingerprints from raw 16S rDNA sequencing data of each sample. Our use of 'DNA fingerprints' refers to alpha diversity – i.e., the distribution of microorganisms in a sample. The company uses various approaches to clean up the sequencing data and ensure that the resulting fingerprints maintain high quality while minimizing the inclusion of spurious microbial strains. Additionally, our software includes tools for quality-checking the data that comes from the sequencing lab. By leveraging a high-quality curated ribosomal database, our tools achieve higher-than-industry standard performance.

Business activities

  • Machine Learning software: Our software enables users to easily train models capable of classifying DNA fingerprints into targeted categories. These categories reflect the distinct characteristics of the sample's environment. For example, they can discriminate based on factors such as the degree of pollution, wastewater quality, gut flora health-promoting properties, skin health, and more. By creating a suitable training set that reflects the targeted classification, our software generates models that accurately classify the samples.
  • NLP software and knowledge mining: The software is designed to link the distinguishing species – the critical strains on which machine learning models base their predictions – to their known metabolic functions as reported in the scientific literature. For Bangkok this meant linking microbes to their ability to metabolize oil and gas, or conversely, to their diminished spread in the presence of increased hydrocarbon concentrations, to validate the classification results. Several Patents and Publications are available and part of the transaction.

Bangkok has been in operation for 8 eight years since a successful spin-out from TNO. With a total revenue of approx. 3 million euros, the company that owns Bangkok has faced challenges in selling enough projects to sustain its operations, despite successful proof of concept studies and pilot projects. Consequently, the company has decided to seek a suitable buyer for the technology stack.
